According to verywellfamily.com, the average time between the birth of twins is about 17 minutes. However, sometimes birthing times of delivery can extend to hours, days, weeks or even longer.
In an extremely rare case, a 29-year-old woman in Kazakhstan, Central Asia gave birth to twins who were born almost three months apart, according to Science Alert.
The publication reported that baby girl, Liya and her brother, Maxim were born 11 weeks apart – with Liya being born on 24 May and Maxim following on 9 August. The time interval between the delivery of the twins was due to baby Liya being born prematurely, weighing just 850g after a gestation period of 25 weeks. Baby Maxim weighed a healthy birth weight of 2.9 kg when he arrived 11 weeks later.
Sharing the news on their Facebook page, the Kazakh Health Ministry revealed that the twins and their mother, Lily konovalova, were doing fine and that the case was a one-in-50-million chance.
“According to statistics, in such cases, the chances of birth of a living child are equal to 1 by 50 million. But thanks to the professionalism of the doctors of the perinatal center, mom and babies are doing well,” they wrote.
Speaking to RT, Konovalova said that her son was “in no rush to come out into the world” and called him a “true Bogatyr”, which is reportedly a strong warrior hero from Russian tales.
This is the not the first case recently where twins were born at such a long time interval, in November 2018 a German woman held a world record after giving birth to twins more than three months apart -with baby Liana being born on 17 November and her twin sister, Leonie on 22 February 2019.
