Really seeing dads

I met a dad today. Ben and I chatted for two hours, leaning forward to try to hear in the hum of an aeroplane.

Within the first 5 minutes he had hauled out pictures of his three kids, giving me a potted biography of each one. 'He’s such a handsome little guy, she’s the naughty one, she bungee jumped with me when she was 7!'

Sitting two seats away was another dad, flying with his five-month-old on his lap. No fussing, a bottle, and soon both baby and dad were asleep.

Ben and I sat looking at them in silence for a minute.

'The thing is,' Ben said. 'With kids, hey?'

'When they jump and expect you to catch them. There’s that absolute trust in their faces. That’s the thing that gets me.'

Thanks Ben, man with baby on plane, and all the other dads who love their kids and care for them so deeply.

Here are some dad stories that dig below the surface:

'She was sniffing drugs'
What single dads feel
Giving dad a blueprint
Fathers, hug your sons
