Hello again, hard-working parents,
Even if you are not the kind of person who loves basking in the sun, you’ll probably be looking forward to some summer fun. Well, one thing’s for certain- your kids are already drooling at the idea of ice creams and splashing in the pool. There’s something magical about the glorious summer holidays when you’re a child.
You may be planning your road trip or plotting which books to read while in your deckchair. If you celebrate Christmas, hopefully you’ve bought the prezzies so your only shopping expeditions will be to stock up on ice for the cold drinks and charcoal for the braai. If not, you may be quivering in fear at the idea of heading to the mall with children who are complaining that they’d rather be dashing through rainbows caused by the sprinkler.
Well, you won’t have to make those packed lunches for a while, and the uniforms can be folded up in the cupboard. That’s a reason to be happy right there.
My kids are keen to get the holiday show on the road- one benefit of having a blended family is that they will get two holiday trips this year, one with their mom and one with me. They’ve pretty much abandoned school in their minds and they’ve even started discussing what food they want to eat in the holidays. There have been some blatant hints about presents and reminders to me that they need to have new flip flops.
What’s summer without flip flops?
I don’t wear them because I have hobbit feet, but, for kids, the thrill of not having to wear school shoes is a small triumph.
If you are managing to have a holiday this December, do remember your sunscreen and safety checks on the road. Summer should be about relaxation and recharging and not dealing with nasty experiences.
We don’t get to have holidays from being parents but we do get to have some fun ones as parents. I always find spending an extended time with my children is valuable and enlightening.
Feel free to share your fun holiday snaps with us on our Facebook page or tag us on Twitter- we’d love to keep up with you.
Enjoy the summer,
Scott
