Our son’s name is…
Giving an unusual baby name can cause some weird reactions, says this mom whose son's name is...

‘Whatever you do,’ I explained to my two pregnant friends, ‘don’t tell anyone the name of your baby until it is born.’ I knew from experience that no-one would say, ‘What a weird name,’ when they were tickling your newborn’s toes; but they certainly would if your baby was still in your tummy. ‘And so you never end up naming them what you want to, but what everybody else wants you to.’

I followed my own advice and kept our 4th child’s name a secret, until he was safely in his cot. Then we made a public announcement: ‘Our lovely new son’s name is Jedi Harry Groves,’ my husband explained. ‘Jedi is Hebrew for loved by God and StarWars for defender of peace and justice in the galaxy. Harry is his great granddad’s name.’

‘What more could a boy ask for,’ I said to the many congratulators, ’to be loved by God and to be a Jedi knight?’

‘A normal name,’ the ladies answered with their puzzled expressions.  But a few men disagreed: ’I want another son just so that I can call him Jedi.’

‘That’s the coolest boy’s name, I’ve ever heard.’

‘I said to my wife we should call our boy Jedi.’

‘And I,’ his wife explained,’said no.’

‘Consider this,’ I said, to a few more sensible ladies,’when Jedi is about 10 years old, he’s going to be a cult hero in Pietermaritzburg. I mean what young 10-year-old boy does not want to be a warrior for justice in this galaxy?’

There is even a Doring Kindersley book out now called, So you want to be a Jedi?
‘They’re crazy for Star Wars; no-one’s going to laugh at him.’

‘He even looks like someone from Star Wars,’ my sister, who was trying to help, added.

‘She must mean,’ my husband said to me later, as I recounted our conversation…

‘Obi wan Kenobi,’ I interrupted,’the dedicated and legendary, Jedi knight…’

‘No, um, that…’

‘Mace Windu, the tall, dark, and wise guy.’

‘No, um…’

‘Qui Gon Jinn, the venerable Jedi master.’

‘Yoda,’ he said at last, ’that’s it, Yoda.’

Do you or your children have unusual names?
