First-time mom Nicole Zeisemer only discovered she was having twins after she'd given birth and doctors spotted a second head while a nurse was trying to stitch her up.

Nicole (31) and her husband Matthew (34) from Michigan in the US had only just been introduced to their daughter Blakeley, when doctors realised that the new mom was still in labour, Fox News reports.

During a post-birth clean up, medics noticed a second head and baby Cade was born 59 minutes later.

The couple only had one scan during the entire pregnancy – the day Nicole went into labour, reports Mirror UK.

The first-time mom had initially decided to have a natural pregnancy which meant no painkillers, no scans, and a home birth. However, the couple weren’t able to follow through with their plan as Nicole went into labour earlier than expected, Metro UK reports.

After 45 hours of labour, Nicole decided to abandon her plan to give birth without painkillers and requested an epidural and a C-section.

But doctors were concerned when the 31-year-old was still experiencing pain after delivering her baby girl.

“It was crazy. We were over the moon but in utter shock.

“There were really no signs that I was carrying more than one baby, in fact people said how small I was. We thought the biggest surprise was going to be the sex of the baby, little did we know!” she remarked.

Nicole, who works in insurance, said that she did not believe doctors when they told her she had another baby inside of her. “It was really scary when they said that something else was inside me. And when they told us that it was another baby I literally asked her if she was lying. I just couldn’t take it all in and was still in so much pain that it was almost impossible to process.”

Doctors believe Cade must have been hiding right behind his sister.

The couple ended up ordering another version of all the equipment they ordered for Berkeley to accommodate their surprise baby boy.

They have since been told that twins and triplets run in her side of the family.
