Beyoncé’s ‘mommy cut’?
Shorter hair is sometimes more convenient if you’re a mom.

Celebrity and mom Beyoncé has unveiled a new haircut on her Instagram account. It’s much shorter than many of her fans are used to seeing, but it could be related to her newish role of motherhood.

Becoming a new mom makes long hair tricky to handle for a number of reasons:
  • You have less time to wash and style your hair, and shorter hair can be easier to maintain.
  • Your child may pull on your hair or try to eat it.
  • The texture of your hair may change during pregnancy, and some women even report hair loss, prompting the drastic measure of cutting it off.
  • You may simply feel like changing your hair to suit your changed lifestyle.
It could also be, of course, that Beyoncé has had the chop to fit in with a trend towards shorter hair!

'What's happening to my hair?'

According to Baby Centre, it is more common for hair loss to take place after pregnancy: “… dry hair may become drier as a result of high levels of progesterone, the female hormone produced in the ovaries. Progesterone works with oestrogen to regulate the reproductive cycle. If this is the case, your hair will be more prone to crack and break, especially in later pregnancy. As it breaks off near the roots it may appear to be hair loss, although it actually isn't.”

Milder shampoos, gentle treatment with no over-brushing and extreme care/caution when it comes to chemicals and hair dye are recommended for pregnant women. Consult your gynae or doctor for more advice on hair loss or which products to avoid during pregnancy.

Of course, whatever your choice of hairstyle or length, you too can rock it as a new mom!
