Are pregnant women moms?
Should pregnant first-time moms get Mother's Day gifts?

Carrying my first child, I don't feel like I should get a Mother's Day gift yet. Yes, I'm growing a life and I'm responsible for his health and well-being the way any mother is about their child but I guess, and maybe it's just me, I don't really feel like a mother till I'm holding him in my arms. Pregnancy is such a precarious process and after suffering a miscarriage before, maybe I'm just feeling cautious.

We asked our Facebook fans if they thought that pregnant first-time moms should get Mother's Day gifts and here's what they had to say:

Yes! Provided dads get recognised for their contribution on Father's Day - Scott Dunlop

I definitely think so. The baby may still be on the way but that mama is doing all the hard work already! I feel the same about dads-to-be and father's day. Once that bump is there, you're a parent. - Robyn Addinall

I think so. Baby is a living being from conception, depends on mother for life. Therefore a pregnant first time mom IS a mother. Its hard work being a mom and it is definitely hard work being pregnant. - Maxine Walker

I would say that as this is a personal day about a family member, it's up to the family (partners) involved. Personally I think, If you have conceived, then there is no reason not to celebrate a tiny life. Many woman struggle to embrace the role of "mommy" at first, helping her welcome the role with a special day like this is a good thing. However, that said, is this day really about gifts? I would hope (as it always has been in our house. )It's just a day about love and togetherness. A pregnant mommy is together with her baby, and there is love, so the day is complete irrespective. Gifts or not. - Tracey Preston

No. Thy r not mothers yet. Anything can happen during pregnancy. - Solly Maredi

While carrying your baby, you are a mom in the making but BEING a mom only happens after birth when you need to love and nurture that little bundle of joy through all the good and the bad times. - Linda Coetzee Van Bruggen

Not until after baby has been born. Then only will they be a mommy... - Diane Smith

No, pregnant women are "moms-to-be" and not moms yet. - Intlafatso Felicia Mogwera

Not really... You're a mom but it's a more personal thing when the baby is actually there. I'll be celebrating my first mothers day this year. - Anastasiya A. Meintjes

Nope your not a mom yet... you're pregnant.. that means mom to be! There will be plenty of time for mothers days when you are mom! Don't be greedy. - Allison Hardwich Whitelaw

Personally I only became a mom when my child was born and I had to take care of her etc .. so NO, I didn't want any gifts or anything until I was a mom to a baby outside the womb who was appreciated for raising my child. - Brigitta Ellis-Nel
