“I’m not pregnant! Er... yay?”
Do you secretly want to fall pregnant by mistake? Sam Wilson does some dipstick research.
(Tammy Gardner)
I was having some fabulously feisty friends over for dinner last Tuesday, and it suddenly occurred to me that I had missed a period.

Being a busy working mother, I did what you do... delegate unthinkingly until you’ve got a free moment. I sent my partner out for a pregnancy test, got my work day out of the way and fobbed off my boss who kept saying things like: ‘OMG, if it’s true you are SO not getting maternity leave.’

By the time I got home it was 7 pm, and my friends were clinking out of their cars expectantly.
“I brought LOTS of wine!” said Karen happily.
“Ja, well hold that thought – I’ve got a stick to pee on before I can drink anything at all. I appear to be a period short this month.”
“Well,” said Karen, wrestling a few bottles under her arm, “that’s a bit of a dampener. Or is it? Do you want to be pregnant?”
“Aargh!” shrieked Paula, nearly dropping the pile of pizzas. “Your children are at a fantastic age now – imagine going back to broken nights and sore nippes and nappies and...”
Karen poked her with a wine bottle.
“... how lovely to have another darling baby,” Paula finished, gamely but not very convincingly.

So we all hurried inside and my lovely friends cheered me on (through the door) as I peed on the pregnancy test and when I came out, flushed and officially unpregnant – we all stared at each other for a moment.

Between us - Paula, Karen and I have six sons; two each. And while not one of us would plan a pregnancy at this stage, we all felt the quick cut of a life unlived, a child unborn, a family not finished.

Because while I don’t feel in a position to choose another child... it would be magic if another child slipped through all our carefully laid plans and chose ME.

Recognise this feeling? How did you know when your family was finished? How would you feel if there was a glipsie in your life?
