We did a quick poll from several schools across the country to find out how much matric students pay for their dance, and what they get for the price. The range in costs shoots up dramatically, especially when you consider that we only asked for the cost of the tickets. It’s worth thinking about when it comes to budgeting.
Most of the schools we asked were happy to share the information, although one or two of the schools which position themselves as ‘elite’ were less willing to reveal just how much this one evening of fun was going to cost:
• King Edward VII, Johannesburg: R1,500, includes partner’s ticket, DJ, food and drinks, as well as loads of exciting raffle gifts which the learners may win
• Diocesan College (Bishops), Cape Town: R1,000, includes partner’s ticket, photo and yearbook, as well as dinner, DJ and drinks. Bishops has a matric parents’ fund which manages the dance
• St Stithians, Johannesburg: R500, no further information available
• Livingstone High School, Cape Town: R250, only matrics from the school are allowed to attend (including the partner), held at Kelvin Grove, includes food, drinks and DJ
• Brescia House Covent, Johannesburg: R250 per learner
• Plumstead High School, Cape Town: R250 per person, three course meal, photo, memento, invite, DJ and drinks
• Reddam House, Constantia and Herschel Girls’ School both refused to disclose any information.
Most schools have large halls and access to budget caterers. Fees may be as high as R100,000 per year (for private schools). Is the cost of a matric dance ticket (or tickets) a large expense, given that clothes and transport will have to be paid for, too?
Note: Prices of tickets and other information was verified by representatives of the schools.
What would you say is a fair price for the glamorous highlight of your child’s school career?
