It’s time to move out!
A house full of adult children can get a bit too crowded for comfort.
I always admired people who made it on their own in the world and I promised myself when I turn 18 I would move out and do exactly that. Back then I was a bit naive, so it hasn’t happened yet.

I do want to be independent one day, but right now it’s my big sister who has taken that big step.

My sister, who is 27, moved out last week. She is the eldest and has been through what I would call an emotional rollercoaster. The Big Move has brought upon a range of emotions, from disappointment to anger to happiness to sadness.

Parents may not always understand why adult children want to move out, but a houseful of adults can be tricky, even when you’re family.

We were three young adults living in the same space. And it could especially be disastrous when two of these young adults have to share a room. The lack of space, privacy and just the simple need for growth bubbles to the surface.

Family life
is hard and with a group of people with extremely different personalities is even more of a challenge. I think once you’ve reached a certain age you have figured out how you like things done and it can be frustrating to have someone correcting you.

As a Muslim girl you are not allowed to move out of the house up until you get married. So if you are 35 years old you should still be living at home? Simple answer, yes.

Most people I know seem to like living with their parents until they get married but we are a very different kind of family. Growing up without a father and learning from a young age that we should only rely on ourselves was a lesson my mother taught us well.

But for now, I’m staying put and watching my sister spread her wings.

What age is it okay to branch out on your own?
