Teens tend to sleep a lot. That makes it a lot harder for them to find the energy to prepare for exams- but not any more: High school kids in central China have resorted to classroom intravenous drips as a study aid to prepare for the nation's notoriously difficult college entrance exams, state press said.

Photos of the kids hooked up to drips at Xiaogang High School in Hubei Province have gone viral on the internet, despite officials claiming that the dangling bottles of amino acids have no harmful side effects, but are merely there to help give the students energy, and improve their physical condition, according to Health24.

The viral pictures are stimulating debate amongst bloggers, whose opinions range from disgust to disbelief. Government officials are investigating what they called “a dangerous practice, which could lead to infections”.

How to avoid drugged teens

So short of giving your dopy teen actual dope, instead of, say, coffee or, better yet, fresh orange juice, how do you get them alert and focused? Encourage (and model) healthy lifestyle habits, such as a balanced, healthy diet, and regular exercise, as well as time away from studying. Screen-based activities such as TV viewing or TV games could have time limits, or be limited to weekends. Sleep is necessary, too, and your teen child may benefit from trying to get to bed earlier.

With the state of our schools, the last thing we’d want to see is an army of nurses heading into the classrooms with racks of drips, ready to hook our kids up to any kinds of chemicals, right?

What do you think our teens need instead of medical intervention in order to concentrate?
