ACTRESS and producer Sonia Mbele, known for her former role in Generations, has ventured into producing and it's paying off.
The 48-year-old is the force behind Real Housewives of Johannesburg, the first African franchise of the Real Housewives series, which has seen significant success in South Africa.
Reflecting on the journey, Sonia shared her initial uncertainty about the brand's potential impact in Mzansi.
"When I started this in 2013, I didn’t think it would be such a big phenomenon. But I kind of knew because, like I said, I tried it in 2013 nobody was ready. Viewers and broadcasters weren't ready. So, I tried again in 2017 because giving up wasn't an option," she said.

Sonia also highlighted her current approach to her career, emphasising her selectiveness regarding roles and projects.
"There's so much I want to do. I choose scripts offered to me. I refuse to go to auditions. I'm not being a brat. With acting, I’m choosing Netflix for now. That's my platform of choice. And in terms of producing, I'm knocking on doors."Additionally, Sonia addressed a legal issue from the previous year. She was accused of tax non-compliance involving a company she partnered with.
"It wasn’t me. It was the company I was working with but because I was one of the partners, the name Sonia Mbele became interesting. However, it had absolutely nothing to do with me. I wasn't even the officer of that company," she said.
