Rudger van Wyk at Doolhof Estate. (Daléne Fourie/News24)

As the only farm in the Wellington wine ward Limietberg, Doolhof Wine Estate can very well be called a Monopole. A French term referring to an area controlled by a single winery, it can be as small as one vineyard or as large as a ward… the other obvious monopole in South Africa is the monopole of Sijnn in Malgas.

Limietberg is also the coolest ward in Wellington, and while Rüdger classifies it as a cool climate, I think it's more about the vast diurnal shift that occurs here (the difference between day and night time temperatures) that ultimately sets it apart from sweltering Wellington. *Though mind you, in winter, it can get pretty cold here, even with a bit of frost, and there's nothing Chardonnay likes more than a good cold snap.

Though you'd be forgiven for not having heard of Doolhof Wine Estate before the appointment of Rüdger van Wyk, it was, in fact, home to Andrew Geddes Bain in the 1840s when he was working on the construction of the Bain's Kloof Pass.
