Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Gary van Niekerk. (Lulama Zenzile/Netwerk24)

The fraud investigation into the mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Gary van Niekerk, which has faced delays for half a year, has finally commenced.

The delays were due to infighting among members of the committee conducting the probe, which came to an end when a new chairperson was elected.

The allegations against the mayor stem from claims that, although Van Niekerk had not been the speaker of the Nelson Mandela Bay council for several months in 2022, he had used an official letterhead and signature of the office to appoint Boqwana Burns Attorneys and rack up legal bills to the tune of R551 586.
