The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden has been closed in the interests of public safety following a veld fire.

"There are veld fires very close to the gardens and as a consequence, there is very low visibility and ash and smoke permeating throughout the grounds," said Nontsikelelo Mpulo, director of marketing and communications at the South African National Biodiversity Institute.

As a result, SANBI had closed the botanical garden to visitors, she said.
