The result of an unexpected motion of no confidence in the leadership of a historic mosque in Kalk Bay was overturned by the Western Cape High Court on Friday, after it found that proper procedures were not followed.

The court ruled that, although it was loathe to become involved in religious affairs, it was clear that the unexpected vote, which removed the committee of the Masjidul Jaamia Kalk Bay located in Quarterdeck Road on 13 February 2022, did not follow correct procedures.

The background to the dispute is that congregants were unhappy with poor attendance, no community outreach, and wanted committee meetings to take place more regularly.
