Dads, take that picture!

accreditation

Moms do so much. Don't get me wrong, dads do as well – I would actually drown without my husband's support – but moms tend to do the lion's share. They're chef, personal shopper, doctor, nurse, cleaner, photographer, and and and... so much more.

When I go through my phone's gallery, there are so many pictures of my kids and pictures of them with their dad, but the only ones there are of me is when my son insists on taking a selfie with me. I'm usually so busy and in the trenches with this mothering thing that I forget to take pictures with them, or I'm just not feeling myself enough to take the photo.

This post by Cyndy Gatewood, a blogger from North Carolina whose aim it is to encourage women through motherhood, really resonated with me when I saw it. She talks to dads and tells them that they should take the picture. That candid picture of the mother of your child talking with your son or laughing with your daughter.

One of my favourite pictures is a picture my husband took of me in the hospital with our daughter. In it, our son is meeting his baby sister for the first time and the joy on everyone's faces is just too much. I look like crap. Who doesn't after giving birth? But it's my favourite because it's such a special moment for all of us.

Here's Cyndy's post from 6 June:

She writes:

"Time goes by so fast and everyday these sweet babies are getting older and older. Before we know it, they'll be packing up their cars and moving off to college.
"Take the picture.
"One day she'll be gone and all the kids have left of her are memories.
"Take the picture."

That last thought is one that really hit home – my kids are not going to care what I look like in the pictures, just that they have pictures with their mother who is no longer around, and those will hopefully be some of their most treasured possessions.

Do you take pictures with your kids or are you always behind the camera? Send your thoughts to chatback@parent24.com and we could publish them.
