Gaston Sirino’s latest league title with Mamelodi Sundowns has catapulted him towards making a solid claim for one of the rare achievements in football.

When Sundowns lift the DStv Premiership title later this month, it will be Sirino’s seventh in a row.

The significance of Sirino’s seven is that he has been a league champion for all the years that he has spent at Sundowns.

This incredible feat of consecutive league titles in the first seven years with a new club is a first in South African and possibly the rest of the world.

The plus for the 33-year-old is that when he joined Sundowns he had been a league winner with Club Bolivar in 2017.

Sirino – who is now eligible for Bafana Bafana selection, arrived at Chloorkop in January 2018.

It is a few players – if any, who have been a league winner in their first seven years with one club the way Sirino has done through his time at Sundowns where he has 41 plus 44 assists in just over 200 appearances.

David Alaba, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, and Jerome Boateng all won at least nine league titles in a row at Bayern Munich, but all had at least one season in which they were not champions at the club.

Andreas Ulmer won nine in a row with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria but missed out twice.

Though they have had seasons when they were not league champions while at Sundowns, Denis Onyango, Thapelo Morena, and Themba Zwane have also won seven in a row as players at Sundowns.

Onyango has now won 11 league titles in total playing in South Africa.
