Parent24 has compiled this shortcut to finding all the online learning resources you need. This article gets updated with new e-learning resources.


With the Covid-19 pandemic remaining a reality, parents have been urged to ensure the learning continues at home as schools remain closed.

While we face an uncertain future, we need to ensure that our children's education for this year is not compromised.

Not all schools have online learning plans in place, but there are several local online learning platforms that can be used so children don't have to fall behind with their school work. 

The Department of Basic Education Website

The department of basic education website provides learning material for everyone from grade R to grade 12. 

Learners can access study material, reading material and multimedia content on the website. 

Vodacom E-school

The Vodacom free e-school is another option for parents and children.

With more than a million registrations, the platform provides access to online classes from grades 3 to 7 promising to add more grades soon.

OLICO Maths Education Programme

OLICO Maths Education Programme is an online maths education programme that features more than 28 000 interactive questions, 376 tutorial videos, as well as worksheets for sharing. The programme also hosts tutoring and discussions over WhatsApp. 

Grades 7, 8 and 9 will be able to downloadable free senior-phase mathematics summary guides on key mathematical concepts.

MTN, Cell C and Rain are making the OLICO Maths Education Programme freely available to its users.

MySkool YouTube Channel

Netwerk24 has a YouTube channel called, MySkool, for learners who receive their education in Afrikaans. 

On this platform grade 12 learners can access lectures where teachers cover relevant content to complete the matric year. 

Snapplify

Snapplify.com is a free online portal that gives grades 1 to 12 access to books and other study material. 

Snapplify also has a reader app, called Snapplify, that one can download for literature reading material.

Syafunda

Syafunda is an online platform that content for grade 10, 11 and 12 learners to learn when teaching isn’t always available.

The interactive video tutorials and assessments give students the means to practice and get instant feedback on their performance.

The app also helps students find bursaries and assists learners trying to get into university.

Zakheni, a Syafunda team member, says “nothing replaces work ethic, integrity and a good attitude,” but sees the role cutting edge technology can play in education.  

MzanziKids

MzanziKids is available on Android and IOS to help children from the age 2 to 6 learn and develop language skills in their mother tongue, or in one of the other official South African languages. 

The app has 12 themes suitable for young children through an integration of images and phonetics to encourage confidence, fluency and comprehension in their chosen language. 

Bellavista S.H.A.R.E  

Bellavista S.H.A.R.E, a division of Bellavista School, presents a solution to South Africa’s literacy crisis with the introduction of Feed the Monster, an app which addresses the basic building blocks of reading.  

Bellavista School partnered with the MTN Foundation and Curious Learning to launch Feed the Monster, an award winning app.

Via Afrika

On the Via Afrika website grades 10 to 12 can find free e-learning content to download. 

Not only are there study guides, but podcasts can also be found on the site.

Sasol Foundation

The Sasol Foundation provides free online primary and high school textbooks and other academic resources during the lockdown period. 

WorkSheetCloud

On WorkSheetCloud you can find free worksheets and online video lessons. 

There are three simple steps on the site and no registration is required. 

School in a box

School in a box is a non-profit organisation that aims to develop and provide collaborative and scalable educational platforms to connect, equip and empower Southern Africans.

They provide academic support for children from grade 1 to 12.

This includes English to Computer Coding.

Students also have access to a vast library in South Africa’s 11 official languages. 

iWhiz

iWhiz offers all school lessons (fully CAPS aligned) from grade R to grade 12.

The lessons are animated and presented in short 3 minutes videos.  

iWhiz is currently also offering free Matric school covering content exactly as per CAPS for each week.

This means there will be no missing of lessons.
