Danielle Martin from Belfast in Northern Ireland initially had a sore throat which worsened.

However, things took a turn for the worst on 30 March when she felt like she was suffocating. Her husband, Bryan, then called an ambulance.

“An ambulance came within five minutes and took me away – I was terrified,” Danielle said, recalling the horrific moment.

The 32-year-old, who has three sons, was diagnosed with pneumonia, but on 1 April tests revealed she’d contracted the coronavirus.

“I felt bad leaving my boys but I knew it was for the best,” she added.

“The doctor rang to say her oxygen had dropped and she’s been put into an induced coma,” her husband Bryan explained. “I was devastated and worried sick,” he said.

“It was so hard trying to explain to our sons, Jaiden (9), Parker (3) and Joshua (2), where mummy is as they had watched her go in the ambulance from the window.”

After 10 days in an induced coma, Danielle’s distress turned to joy as she was informed by medics that she’s pregnant with twins.

"I was in disbelief when they told me about the twins. It was the cherry on top of the cake knowing I had beat coronavirus and have twins on the way!” she said.

Danielle, who hadn't been out for 10 days prior to catching the virus, says she feels “incredibly lucky” to have survived but warns others to stay at home as it “could happen to anyone”.

“I woke up feeling very confused an agitated from the coma but once I’d come round, I was extremely grateful,” she added.

Although it was an odd way for her to find out about the twins, she’s delighted that at least she’ll “be able to remember something good about this horrible time”.

“I’m recovering with plenty of rest and hoping my friends and family are doing the same.”
