Abandoned babies at the Door of Hope in Johannesburg are in urgent, desperate need of nappies, and there’s something you can do about it.
The shelter has requested the public to buy the nappies online from listed retailers in the nearby area who would then deliver them to Door of Hope.
The organisation, which has been in operation for over 20 years, was founded by the Berea Baptist Mission Church after it noticed an increase in babies being abandoned and/or left for dead.
The shelter’s website details how it was founded: “Under the leadership of Pastor Cheryl Allen, the church at the time made a hole in their wall and a ‘Baby Box’ was installed allowing for mothers to leave their babies any time day or night for the church to take them in.”
“The moment a baby is placed, care workers on duty receive an electronic signal alerting them. The baby is taken in and the anonymity of the ‘donor’ ensured. News has spread and other babies have been brought personally by their mothers or have come through other means such as the police, community members, hospitals or clinics,” the website states.
Social-media users have made online purchases after the organisation’s plea went out.
Some of the urgent items Door of Hope needs are: Nan Optipro 1 and 2, Dis-Chem and PnP vouchers, multivitamin syrups for ages 1 month to 4 years, auto washing powder, long-life milk, brown sugar and canned tuna.
