Pregnant celebs in high heels

Heavily-pregnant Kourtney Kardashian gave onlookers a scare when she nearly took a tumble while wearing high heels recently.  She was attending an event when the speed wobble took place whilst navigating a flight of stairs. A fan helped to steady her, and assisted her up the steps, according to the Daily Mail.

Kardashian is just one of many celebrities who refuse to give up the glamour while expecting. She has been seen in Christian Louboutin five-inch heels which would help her tower over Snooki, the pint-sized Jersey Shore star who has also been spotted during her pregnancy in platform-soles and high heels. Snooki has even Tweeted pictures of her over-the-top footwear.

It’s hard enough to stay upright on heels even when not pregnant, so having a baby bump could just make you lose your poise (and your footing).

Victoria Beckham, Jessica Simpson, Kate Hudson and Beyoncé have all rocked heels during their pregnancies, too, but what are the risks?

5 risks to wearing high heels during pregnancy:

•    Pregnancy weight-gain is likely to affect the way you walk as well as your general posture, making you top heavy, and high heels, together with your bump, mean that you have farther to fall and fewer options to prevent yourself from correcting a fall.
•    The continued wearing of high heels places a strain on the lower back and also the feet and ankles, and these strains are very similar to the strains experienced by expectant moms, too.
•    Pregnancy symptoms such as faintness or dizziness should not be combined with compromised balance and an altered centre of gravity.
•    Muscles and ligaments soften and stretch because of an increase in the ovarian hormone relaxin, making your feet more prone to ankle and ligament strains.
•    High heels alter your posture, shorten your calf muscles and place increased pressure on your back and knees placing extra pressure on joints when they are already under strain

According to a survey by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, seven out of 10 women admitted to suffering from foot problems including swollen ankles (37%), swollen feet (45%) and arch and heel pain (16%) while pregnant.

High heels don’t cause miscarriages!

Injuries associated with wearing high heels typically include damage to the ankles, back, hips, thighs and knees. The myth that just wearing high heels may cause a miscarriage is often repeated but untrue- simply wearing heels will not induce a miscarriage, although a fall could obviously injure mom and baby.

Specialists recommend wearing flat, supportive shoes as much as possible during pregnancy, noting that pregnant celebs spotted wearing heels are mostly doing that at functions, so if you are going to attend a function and you want to wear heels, consider taking along a small pair of pumps for before and after.
