Right to Birth (RTB) advocates for women and society to be educated on what science says about best practice in birth and thereafter.
The organisation wants parents to be given the choice as to how they would like to birth, and was founded in response to recent news has highlighted worrying trends in the care of pregnant women in SA's private healthcare system.
These include:
- 77% c-section rate for women birthing in private healthcare facilities
- Lack of support among doctors for working with independent midwives
- This is despite midwives having an 82% success rate for vaginal births
- Only 13% of women with midwives undergo a c-section
To unpack the implications these trends have on women, doctors and the insurance industry, RTB are hosting the first Birth Indaba in Cape Town.
The event is taking place on Thursday 12 March at 7pm at Workshop17 at the V&A Waterfront.
This event is free and open to anyone.
Speakers include:
· Professor Sue Fawcus (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UCT) Understanding maternity care in obstetrician-led private healthcare and how it relates to C-section rates.
· Sister Angela Wakeford (Independent Midwife) Overview of Birth Options Independent Midwifery practice and the importance of its statistics 2014-2019.
· Dr Maura Lappeman (Clinical psychologist) The role of silence in maternal care and the patient-doctor relationship.
· Justin Malherbe (Webber Wentzel) Trends in childbirth-related litigation, what has changed in the insurance field, and ethical concerns impacting private healthcare practice.
Her Name is Agnodice
RTB will also be screening the short documentary feature: Her Name is Agnodice.
Agnodice is a legendary figure credited as the first female midwife or physician, in ancient Greece.
